Fixed rate expense (FRE) allowance

A FRE allowance of £1,022 has been applicable since 2013-14 (£850 per year previously), which was agreed between HM Revenue & Customs and BALPA.  This enables a pilot to claim tax relief for this amount without the requirement to produce receipts or expense details albeit the amount should be reduced if any employer contributions are made or they provide a significant amount of equipment.

The expenses covered by the FRE are listed below, but HM Revenue & Customs will allow a pilot to choose between that and claiming the actual costs instead (however, evidence would be required by way of receipts).
